Not a Russian naval officer nor a Chinese. Somebody named him like that – who knows why? While looking for some information Isaw the name Vanessa atalanta and I thought it was the name of the person submitting information on this butterfly. Later I found it to be it’s Lepidopterologycal (very difficult to pronounce) name.
My wife saw it resting on a chair in the yard and called me out to take a shot. The nice guy gave me enough time to go upstairs, get the camera focus and shoot a few shots before he decided to move on.
The Red Admiral is found in temperate Europe, Asia and North America. It has a 45–50 mm (1.8–2.0 in) wing span. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and sometimes again in autumn.
Thank you very much for looking and for your comments on yesterday's picture.
Nice shot- I believe it gets its name because of the red patches on his wings and because it is one of the larger butterflies. Just a guess, but that's what I've always supposed.
