A second shot from the L-Isla promenade, this time in the opposite direction. Across the water is the city of Birgu also known as Vittoriosa after it was named Citta’ Vittoriosa (Victorious city) by the Knights of St John for being the headquarters and last line of defence of the Island during the Great Siege of 1565. During ferocious attacks on the fortifications, Grand Master La Valette himself was in full armour with his knights and soldiers defending the walls of the city – and this when he was 70 years old (can you imagine doing that yourself) . The floodlit church is the Parish Church of St Lawrence. The majestic building on its left is today the Maritime Museum, formerly the Naval Bakery which catered for the whole of the British Mediterranean fleet.
Joke: The man had been drinking at one of the bars on the L-Isla seafront. He decided to leave his car parked at L-Isla and walk back home. As he was walking unsteadily along, he was stopped by a policeman.
"What are you doing out here at 2 A.M.?" said the officer.
"I'm going to a lecture." The man said.
"And who is going to give a lecture at this hour?" The cop asked.
"My wife." said the man.
