BUILDINGS OF NOTE

Still on the Birgu theme.

These are some of the beautiful old buildings we came across as we walked along the narrow streets of this small old city.

Birgu is a Maltese corruption of the Italian word ‘borgo’ meaning village. Before the arrival of the Order of St John it was a small fishing village. The knights established their headquarters at Fort St Angelo at the tip of this village where there was a fort which they strengthened and enlarged. Beautiful buildings to house the Auberges of the Order and of the nobles who followed them rose up in the quiet village. After the Great Siege of 1565, the village was given the title of Citta’ Vittoriosa (the Victorious city) for its important role in the defeat of the invading Ottoman forces.
