Shot taken as we went round Fort St Elmo. Enlarge for best view if you have time. Thank you
This chapel has been in existence since 1488 and whilst planning this fort, the Order’s engineer decided to incorporate it into the very structure of the casemated ramparts.
This chapel served as the final battleground for the capture of the fort during the Great Siege of 1565. Within it knights and chaplains were slaughtered as they tried to defend the altar. (Source Heritage Malta)
In the Great Siege of 1565 the whole fort was completely transformed into rubble during the fierce unabating bombardment by the Ottoman forces. It was rebuilt and made stronger after the siege and during British rule it was enlarged. Today the chapel has been restored. The coat of arms on top of the door of the chapel is of Grand Master Nicolas Cottoner and dates from the 17th century.
