One last shot from our visit to St Elmo.
Left hand picture: “To honour her brave people I award the George Cross to the Island Fortress of Malta to bear witness to a heroism and devotion that will long be famous in history”. Signed by King George VI on 15th April, 1942.
The George Cross has become part of our flag. Many of us are very proud of this award and want it to remain there (I am one of them) but others want it removed from our national flag as it does not form part of our heritage.
I have shown this before when I took a shot of it when last I came to Fort St Elmo but I feel it worthwhile to show it again in my recent capture.
Top right hand: Bell of HMS Indomitable. Indomitable was a modified Illustrious-class aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy. It participating in Operation Pedestal, the largest convoy to supply the besieged island of Malta. This convoy comprised 14 cargo ships and an unprecedentedly large escort of warships. During the operation, Indomitable was hit by two 500 kg bombs and suffered three near misses; a 500 kg bomb penetrated the unarmoured portion of the flight deck, causing damage that required her to withdraw for repairs.

Many thanks for viewing and for all your words of support after the tragedy of last Monday.
So interesting. Surely the GC is part of Malta's heritage...a very proud part. My father and two uncles served in the Royal Navy, so this is special for me. Thank you, Dione. Fav.
