Yes, I am deeply in love with this edifice and am mesmerised with its beauty everytime I visit it. This is Saint John’s co-Cathedral left to enjoy by the rest of the world by the Knights of Saint John and Malta when they had to depart from Malta and make way for the might of Napoleon Bonaparte and his soldiers.
The knights of the Order weren’t favourably looked on by many Maltese during their last days in Malta. Especially in their last decades in Malta they were arrogant and hauty and looked down at the common Maltese people. But I cannot blame them wholly for their attitude towards the Maltese; they came from the noblest and richest families of Europe; even the Maltese nobility did that.
This was the start of our Saturday evening in Valletta to watch the V18 opening celebrations. The events were to start at 7.00pm but we went early to hear mass (before the church started to fill up) and have a pizza before the fun began. V18 is the code-name for Valletta’s six month spell as the Culture Capital of Europe.
