This a shot of the Adoration (Holy Sacrament) Chapel of the monastery church of La Rabida. Beautiful – no? Christopher Columbus prayed before the effigy of Santa María de la Rábida, also known as Nuestra Señora de los Milagros before starting his personal crusade. The effigy is just above the tabernacle.
The monastery of La Rabida was constructed in 1412 on the site of a Moorish stronghold ( 'Rábida' is an Arabic word meaning fortress).
The monastery has a fourteenth century Gothic-Mudejar church, where Captain Martín Alonso Pinzón, from Palos de la Frontera, who sailed with Columbus in one of his ships, is buried. His tomb is just underneath the main altar of the chapel (at least that’s what we were told).
