Mdina’s main gate is guarded by two stone lions each holding a shield. I took this shot with the city walls and ditch in the background, Sunday before last when I went there with my grandson, Max.
It is thought that the pair of lions guarding the main gate of Mdina refer to the capital city. Mdina was in fact the capital city of the Maltese Islands before the building of Valletta.
This side of the city walls were rebuilt during the era of the Knights of St John and Malta in the 18th century. Mdina Gate, the city's main entrance, was designed by the French architect Charles François de Mondion.
For those who asked: petards are rockets which are fired up into the sky and when they explode they make a big flash and bang only. They are much cheaper than the colourful rockets that are fired when the sky is dark and are fired during daytime. The ground fireworks are different. The are normally erected on poles use very small rockets – like rifle bullets - which are tied closely to each other on a structure – such as a wheel – and with their power they make the structure move (rotate) until they get spent. They are colourful, let out a lot of smoke and very often make the sound of a whistle as they move.
