L-isla captured from the walls of Fort St Elmo. L-Isla is a corruption of the Italian word isola meaning island. The town was renamed Citta' Invicta (Unconquered City) after the Great Siege of 1565 and later also Senglea for Grand Master Claude de La Sengle. The old name still holds on amongst us Maltese.
At the tip of l-Isla is what is left of Fort St Michaela. It played a very important role together with Fort St Angelo in the defeat of a huge army (and navy) of an invading Ottoman force in 1565. It also suffered a lot of damage from enemy bombing during WWII because it was very close to the naval dockyard.
I tried this shot in b&w and preferred it to the coloured version.
Many thanks for your views, comments, and FAV’s. They are very much appreciated. Thank you also for the good laugh I had reading your fun comments on yesterday's picture.
I have a mad urge to straighten that horizon, but at the same time I am really enjoying the complexities of the architecture and cliffs here. What a packed full scene!
So much to see here. sometimes b&w looks better than the coloured version. I agree the sky line could be a bit straighter...but then who looks at it when the architecture is what catches ones eye.
Really interesting history.
