My grandfather played trumpet - when he was young, he studied music and played in jazz combos, and in the first half of his life, he was apparently well known in his area for his trumpet playing. But it wasn't what he did for a living and by the time I was old enough to know him, he didn't really play all that often.
When he passed in 2013, I inherited his contemporary trumpet - the one with the case, mouthpieces and valve oil, etc.
When my grandmother passed in late 2019, my uncle found this treasure tucked away on a high closet shelf in a plastic bag. Best guess from the markings on it is that it dates from the 1930s or 40s, and it might actually be a coronet rather than a true trumpet. I will never know it's entire history. Is this what he played in school? Did he inherit it or collect it later in life?
Regardless, I had it cleaned and oiled and hung it right above the piano, where it can be easily reached and played now and then.
