Erosion Control Fail by schmidt

Erosion Control Fail

Today at lunch I visited a site (Highway 16 just east of Range Road 14) that I'd driven by a couple of weeks ago. My brief look at that time suggested that the erosion and sediment control applied to the roadside construction was not adequate.

When I took a closer look, I found that they'd put all of their eggs in the sediment control basket, by installing a couple of lengths of silt fence, and paid almost no attention to erosion control. In fact, the only erosion control practice (slope tracking) was misapplied by tracking across the slope rather than up-and-down. That made things worse and caused rills and gullies to initiate where they otherwise might not have.

On the bright side, the silt fence in the photo appears to have been installed properly and not failed, despite filling to the brim with sediment from the upstream area!
Cap'n, she can't take another rainstorm! (Looks like it's going to fail just right of centre, next time it rains).

Today's practises have been left to slide...
