... well that's what I started with anyway and then wondered what to put with it for another attempt at my challenge shot. The pestle and mortar were both turned by my Dad on his little lathe, so that made me think about adding the wooden wine glass - he made me a set of 6 turned in mulberry wood. Then I had to add the bottle of wine, and then find some things I might be crushing in the mortar - Dad's garlic seemed the obvious choice, and a knife to cut the garlic.
To be honest I'm not particularly happy with any of my shots from this setup ... the knife is at an angle such that it is not easily identified. I added the lemon and parsley for some colour, but the parsley is too hidden behind the garlic to see what it is. My previous attempt was happy and spontaneous, but this seems more contrived somehow. Oh well, tomorrow is another day and at least I had fun.
For your challenge how about gathering together 4 or 5 objects that you would not normally find together and shoot them in a way that is interesting and pleasing yo you. Have fun!
I'm with Mona and VML the set up. The textures and muted colours are 'Old Master-Ly' and am delighted to ’see' your father again.
Last week my GP challenge was a still life...and how I agonised over it. Now I'm wondering if I position items In a certain way because I'm right handed. Which, in turn, begs the question, what would it be like if I mirrored the positions to some extent to achieve a different, more unusual, more, effective arrangement? Am thinking 'aloud'.
there's a lack of 'randomness' about it which makes it less suitable for your challenge - but as a classic still life I think you're onto a winner. You can see some tweaks to make - I'm a bit distracted by the sharp line running through the reflection of the lemon
@mona65 Thank you Mona. This was the last of the afternoon sunlight coming in through the back window - hence the unfortunate shadows due to shrubbery outside as well as cottage pane windows, but earlier shots without the sunlight didn't have the warmth or reflections
@s4sayer Thank you Margo for the interesting thoughts about set up and right handedness. I too am right handed and am making a conscious effort to try and use my left hand more as I believe that will improve my creativity!?!
@anniesue Thanks Annie-Sue. Yes you are absolutely right about the lack of randomness - and that was mainly what bothered me about it fitting the challenge. I think the logical side of me battles with randomness, so this has actually been a very good challenge to highlight that. You are quite right about the sharp line running through the reflection - I am not sure yet what is causing that. I am not very much in control of my light at the moment and there are all sorts of things between the sunlight and my dining room table, including shrubs and trees outside with shadows waving in the wind, and cottage pane windows causing some deep shadow lines ...
@777margo@jnorthington@moviegal1@lynnz Thank you, Margo, Judy, Lynn, and Keri @narayani Thanks Narayani. Yes I have some wonderful items hand made by my Dad. I gave one of the sets of wine glasses to my nephew when he came here from USA after my Dad (his granddad) died. He has missed out on things like this being so far away, so he was thrilled to have something, and it felt good to share with my family.
Well I know you say you're not satisfied but I think its lovely. It has a warmth to it and the different woods are great. A little reflection just adds to it - I'd be well pleased with this plus you have incorporated some personal memories. fav
@vignouse@Cherrill Thank you so much for the lovely comments, Richard and Cherrill. My main problem is that it doesn't really meet my challenge which is to put random items together ... these all have a logical connection (I think?) @drnhtung Thank you so much, Tung Nguyen @carolmw Thanks for the lovely comment Carol
