Karen and I took a morning trip to Goedverwacht, an old Moravian Mission Station. Such an interesting and enjoyable day. The whole life of this little community revolves around the church which even has a large pipe organ, a brass band and a choir! Up until 7 years ago they were so strict that men had to enter the church through the door on the left, and ladies used the door on the right. All the men sat on the left hand side of the church, and ladies on the right, with a wooden divider between them so the ladies and men couldn't be distracted from the sermon by looking at each other. The wooden panel dividing the church in half is still there, and many of the old customs still prevail although it is no longer the church law.
@ludwigsdiana Thanks Diana. It is a quaint little town called Goedverwacht just off the road between Velddrif and Piketburg. Very easy for you to get to from Stellenbosch - you would just get onto the N7 and head north as far as Piketberg, then turn off towards Velddrif. It is close to Piketberg so will probably take you just over an hour to get there. There is an old water mill as well and the old slave graveyard is very interesting too. A lovely friendly community with people ready to talk to you and tell you with pride about their little town. At no time did I feel in the least bit unsafe. Thinking of going back in a few weeks time to get into the water mill museum which was closed today
