Don loved my "Faces of the West Coast" project and somehow I lost the confidence to continue with it after he died. But I decided I have to make a concerted effort to start it again so I went down to the harbour in search of a willing target to shoot, and willed myself to speak to this man who was busy sanding parts a fishing trawler with an electric sanding machine in preparation for painting. There was blue paint dust everywhere, and he seemed quite pleased when I asked him if I could take his photo. He smiled at me, but he wouldn't smile for the camera. Half his front teeth are missing ...
You are so good at those portraits. And I admire not only your photographic work, but also your courage to ask people for a portrait. Don would be so proud of you to go on with this fab project.
