Clivia

One of the few Clivia's that survived the nasty neighbour has buds that are starting to open.
Just after the harsh lockdown last year I drove to Jo'burg and as away for 3 weeks to see my new baby granddaughter. On my return I discovered the neighbour had cut down half a tree (she is entitled to cut down overhanging branches) but she then had all the branches thrown over the wall and dumped on my side killing about 6meters of my garden in the process because they had been buried under all the cut logs and branches for 3 weeks. We barely speak any longer.
Oh no, how awful!! Lovely photo though. Mineā€™s never flowered.

Sorry to hear that

So sad Desi, especially here where we have to stick together! Lovely shot of the survivor.

@narayani Thanks narayani. The other survivor isn't flowering this year, but perhaps next year I may be able to start dividing them again, and perhaps hope for some flowers then.

@bkbinthecity Thank you
@ludwigsdiana Yes it is sad. When I spoke to her on returning she just said to me that my tree was overhanging the fence and the branches were irritating her scratching on the roof (they built their house inside the building line very close to my property). I asked why she didn't dispose of all the branches she had cut away and her response was that the tree is on my property so she shouldn't have to pay her gardener to cut up the branches to bag them for removal.

Lovely flower, glad you've got some survivors. Sad when people go about things the wrong way: yes, she could trim back the branches - but no, you don't just throw them over the fence!

Did she pay the gardener to cut them down in the first place? What a wretched person.
Clivia are lovely plants. Glad you had some survivors.

@anniesue Yes you are right. There are some trees on a neighbour's property behind me that are a nuisance to me - but all I do is either get my gardener to cut them back for me, or I cut them back myself and collect all the bits together and cut them up to put into green bags for garden refuse collection. Nothing is left lying in my neighbour's property

@meotzi Yes - we have a large number of unemployed folk who walk around looking for piece work in gardens, or painting houses etc. I have a lovely man from Malawi who comes to work in my garden once a week. He needed quite a lot of supervision in the beginning, but now he knows how I like things to be done and I just tell him the tasks for the next few hours. Other days he works for other people. His family are back in Malawi and he is working in South Africa to earn money to send back home to his family. I think all his employers will give him a decent breakfast and lunch like I do, so he doesn't have to buy much food for himself and only needs money for his rent which is a room he shares with his brother, so he manages to send quite a lot of his earnings home. The lady next door to me is also widowed so we could have been support for each other. She employs a different person to help her in her garden. So basically if my gardener is cutting up branches to bag them or loading them into my car for us to take to the dump, it is taking more of the time I am paying him for so there is less time for other tasks. I guess that is why she told her gardener to just throw everything over the fence into my property

@koalagardens Yes they are beautiful. The orange ones are much more common. The yellow ones are special. But I actually like the vibrancy of the common orange coloured ones anyway.

Oh thatā€™s awful. So distressing, such disregard for your precious garden.
