I have played around with Orchid shots all day, and it's frustrated the hell out of me. I am beginning to think that my Macro lens is not right because the DOF is so shallow, even at f/11. I used purple backing card and my new lightstand.
I will post a couple of shots.
Any tips on shooting Orchids would be very gratefully received.
I find orchids difficult too - for me it's all the sticky out bits / random shape and I think that, for me throws out the focus. Nevertheless - this is a lovely shot! I like the lighting.
Machine gun :)) !! My florist, actually not mine but a local orchid enthusiast says there is an alien inside every orchid, lift the flap and see!! No tips from me but I think that looks pretty good.......poor you how very frustrating and you could have been in the sun!!!
@fannyb Thanks Fanny. It has rained here and been gloomy most of the day sadly. The forecast is better for the week though, until I go to see England v West Indies at Headingley in friday!!! I have reached the conclusion that a macro is the wrong lens to shoot an Orchid. I will have ago at it again tomorrow with another lens maybe.
WOW I love this shot in all honesty Sean - the petals have got vibrant veins and the lighting is perfect. I have been playing around with macro lenses also - what have you got?
I bought some lenses you fit on your normal camera lens - one says macro lens and then the following ones state 1+, 2+, 3+ and 4+ and I use the 4+ on with the macro one - they are not bad for £8 on eBay!! I am still learning about real close up shots mind. Don't think its my bag but I will keep trying lol :)
I love the composition and the contrast between colored orchich and dark background. I tried it myself and the narrow focus nearly drives me crazy. So I agree to Mike, a tripot and > f18 is needed. @runningbk
This looks good! Great colors. I like the details on the lip. I think you've captured them quite well. Orchids can be challenging to shoot but don't give up!
