St. Pancras Station's Christmas Tree by seanoneill

St. Pancras Station's Christmas Tree

We had a wonderful family day out in London on saturday.

Here is the Christmas Tree at St. Pancras taken from the Champagne Bar.I know it breaks the rule of 3rds, but sometimes the subject deserves centre stage.

We enjoyed a giant crossword on the way down, and then had a wander through the arcades off Piccadilly and then to Fortnum and Mason's for some Christmas treats, before going to the Hard Rock Cafe for lunch. Then some retail therapy for Rebecca and the boys at Hollister, Superdry, Zara, Fat Face and Covent Garden before heading into theatreland.

We saw "The boy with tape on his face", who was incredibly funny, more of that on a future post. After that a walk up to Trafalgar Square to see The nation's christmas tree, before heading back to St Pancras for an enjoyable 90 minutes at the Champagne Bar watching the world go by.

We all slept well!!! This looks good viewed large.
Actually it doesn't break the rule of thirds... it is in the centre third ;) Besides, rules are made to be broken and it's a rare thing for me to "think" about that in a shot... I just shoot what looks right/good to me... when I "think" about those things I mess it up lol.

This is really beautiful :)

Very good shot. Rule of perspective in this case :-)

Nice movement in this shot

Rules are made to be broken! That is a lovely tree and a beautiful capture of it. Happy Christmas, Sean!

Not a bad place to have to wait for a train!! Love the busy people and love the shot......rules be damned!!

Great shot. Love the colors and the movement of the people. Did you bring a tripod or do you have such a steady hand?

Sounds a perfect family day out, I just love the atmosphere in London before Christmas! This tree deserves centre stage, like all the motion blur either side of it too!

What rule is that? ;-) I like the hustle and bustle.

Beautiful! The composition is great, sometimes you just know when rules don't apply, that's good artistic sensibility! The shapes in this are fantastic and I really like the contrast of the busy atmosphere with that one guy relaxing on a bench. :)

A really lovely shot. The tree is quite striking and love the blur in the foreground. Lots of contrasts here. Sounds like you all had an absolutely fab day.

Your narrative makes me nostalgic, although my experiences there were more than 40 years ago. Strong objects like this tree look great centered. I really like the movement around the tree.

It works really because of the symmetry in my (amateur) mind! And the motion blur adds. What a great family day out - nice that your eldest still wants to participate too!

There are other composition rules than the thirds. Here, the motion on both sides of the tree (and the two stationary figures) and the symmetric side lines converging on a vanishing point, contrasted against the color asymmetry of the roof (with still repeating arch patterns!) adds so much punch to this shot. Great Shot
