Clipstone Colliery ~ 17 by seanoneill

Clipstone Colliery ~ 17

A great day at the Photography Show today. I am lucky that I live 45 minutes from teh NEC, so we dropped thie kids at achool and were there for 9-30. An inspiring 90 minute talk from Steve McCurry followed by a visit to the trade stands I had earmarked. I'm a lucky boy, I got a great deal on 2 new lenses for my X-Pro 1, joined the RPS, and subscribed to Hungry Eye among other things.

This is another of my series of Clipstone Colliery shots. This office looks as if it were once pivotal to the safe and efficient running of the colliery. I am sure that it once rang to the laughter of the working man.

In 2012 the UK consumed 64.1m tonnes of coal, of which 44.8m tonnes were imported.

Better large if you have time.
This is amazing...Love and fav!

My first reaction was, "how did you get into my old office?" ;)

I avoided the Photography Show - thought it sounded like it would be too expensive with that Fuji stand & all...

Awesome shot.

@humphreyhippo It was. Have you seen the new "signature" series, where they will add a coloured leather skin to your camera? Looks so cool. It was rammed!! I had a plan of the 20 or so stands i wanted to go to and stuck to it!! We were home by 3pm!
March 3rd, 2014
@humphreyhippo I can now see why you were sad to leave your old office!!
March 3rd, 2014
@seanoneill Yes it was very *cough* "texture-rich". ;)

I'm trying to avoid actually seeing an XT1 in real life.

Loving everything that fuji produce at the moment, what lenses did you purchase Sean? The 56mm 1.2 looks amazing.
March 3rd, 2014
@andrewkru they are incredible Andrew. I bought the 18-55 and 55-200 to complement my 18mm and 60mm. Can't wait to try them out, may do so tomorrow.....
March 3rd, 2014
I look forward to seeing your shots!
March 3rd, 2014
Love, love, love! Just the right amount of texture. Big fav

Congrats on the new toys

@humphreyhippo judging from the crowds today, they are giving the big boys a bloody nose. It is one cool camera, and with new lenses on the way for it it's a serious camera to last the next 4 or 5 years without envy creeping in when new models come out, maybe......

Love these opportunities to shoot left overs from the past. Would love to go there.
March 3rd, 2014
Another brilliant capture. You've found a wonderful time capsule here.

Jo
What a great find and shot, would love to come across places like this. Enjoy your new toys!
March 3rd, 2014
Amazing one day a hustling and bustling the next time stood still. Fav.
March 3rd, 2014
Wonderful. Its impossible to find places like that around here. Everything not being used will be flattened immediately.
March 3rd, 2014
really cool textures and history in this shot
March 3rd, 2014
Sean, we discussed photo books a while back and I've found a very good one. Looking at Photographs by John Szarkowski. It's a walk trough the history of photography, photos from both known and unknown photographers.
March 3rd, 2014
@primitiveprobe thanks, I'll look him up. Something McCurry said today, that to be a great photographer you need to understand and appreciate the history of photography and the masters.

I love your use of black and white in this, as well as the composition and mood. That chair has a lot of personality! Fav
March 3rd, 2014
Love this, particularly the desk with the bottle on it and the beautifully shaped chair. Would have loved to hear Steve McCurry speak.
March 3rd, 2014
slow day at work....
March 3rd, 2014
Neat shot. Looks like quite a noble chair for an important person. If only it could talk.
March 4th, 2014
This is amazing. The light. The composition. Love the old chair...you can almost imagine someone sitting there... Fav for me.
March 4th, 2014
Very lucky to see Steve McCurry. I really like this photo. We see a lot of abandoned buildings and rooms here on 365, but all too often, they are empty and have little personality. This one still has a human look to it, especially that out of place wing chair. Fav.

Lou
Abandoned furniture boggles my mind. Could no one else use it?
The bottle on the desk makes it for me. It appears the room was left without much prior notice. Neat.
March 4th, 2014
I think IKEA ( u have the store there?) have to see and fix this room...hA!:) great capture and enjoy ur toys !!
March 4th, 2014
The bottle and weird chair makes this shot. Maybe someone who is homeless was living there for a while.
March 4th, 2014
Sad and depressing, but that's progess I suppose. Great shot, love the chair.
March 4th, 2014
That's a cool shot. Excellent composition and makes me think about the scene. Fav!
March 4th, 2014
cool....strange to see the armchair and the bottle of water on the desk..as if someone let it like that few minutes ago ....
March 4th, 2014
this is just such a cool shot - I really enjoy your work :) FAV!!
March 4th, 2014
@vega Thank you, I am always thrilled when someone says they like what I do.
March 4th, 2014
COOL, Sean. Love this. Fav!
March 4th, 2014
I love this too! A feeling of nostalgia. Beautifully done. Fav!
March 4th, 2014
Fabulous shot - love that old chair
March 4th, 2014
The chair makes the shot doesn't it. Love it!
March 4th, 2014
Love the light flooding onto the desk and chair, grunge and decay at its best, fav.
March 4th, 2014
An excellent study in decay!
March 4th, 2014
I agree with david - that chic is really pivotal in this picture - I wonder who sat in it?
March 4th, 2014
It's definitely got that 'If only they could talk' look to it. Love that haunted look and feel to this.
March 4th, 2014
Super image, great enlarged, Sean. Love that 'Signals for manriding conveyors'! Poignant, nostalgic. Your Fuji camera sounds good, Tina has the Finepix EXR 600, great compact zoom with Raw.
March 4th, 2014
Check you out... on the home page ;) I haven't even looked at 365 for weeks really.... decided to this morning and was graced with this. Another wonderful shot from you and as always, love your story telling. Hope you are well, my friend. Lots of changes going on here but all good and moving forward :) I have just hung 3 images in a cafe for display and sale... nervous excitement lol. Take care xoxo
March 5th, 2014
@ozziehoffy I am very pleased to hear from you Cass, and that things are good for you. I have been wondering how things are going for you and the boys. Well done on the images in the cafe, that is a big step.
March 5th, 2014
@seanoneill Thanks Sean :) Yeah, just been rather busy. It was indeed.... and I ended up with only a couple of weeks to organise it all from choosing images to printing/framing/delivering etc. which I got done in a week as I was let down by one printer.
March 5th, 2014
@ozziehoffy Well, the very best of luck. Which pictures are you exhibiting?
March 5th, 2014
Awesome shot Sean, your processing really adds to the atmosphere of this abandoned place. Fav.
March 5th, 2014
Love this!! Fav
March 5th, 2014
Wonderful shot. Great comp. Love the b&w and lighting!
March 5th, 2014
Fantastic clarity in the b/w
March 5th, 2014
Great shot :D good use of containment and creates a dwelling atmosphere :)
March 5th, 2014
Very cool B&W, gives it a great vintage feel!
March 5th, 2014
I'm just going say fav :-)
March 5th, 2014
Such a great storytelling shot. Are you going to have a go at the getting the qualification with rps, any one of your series would ace it.
March 5th, 2014
@cazla yes I am, largely off the back of your encouragement to do so a few months ago. I wondered if you would like to help me put a portfolio together?
March 5th, 2014
Gosh not sure I'm that qualified too but very happy to help. My best friends father did it last year so will get some advice from him for you. Very pleased your doing it.
March 5th, 2014
@cazla I need to put a broad portfolio of 10 shots together showing a breadth of skills. I think that's where I need advice, and working out what is missing!
March 5th, 2014
@cazla thanks!
March 5th, 2014
it looks like a set for a play ... the story is unfolding ...
March 6th, 2014
Super Fav!!
March 6th, 2014
This is great.
March 11th, 2014
Great capture of past times, caught the feel of how it was.
