A great day at the Photography Show today. I am lucky that I live 45 minutes from teh NEC, so we dropped thie kids at achool and were there for 9-30. An inspiring 90 minute talk from Steve McCurry followed by a visit to the trade stands I had earmarked. I'm a lucky boy, I got a great deal on 2 new lenses for my X-Pro 1, joined the RPS, and subscribed to Hungry Eye among other things.
This is another of my series of Clipstone Colliery shots. This office looks as if it were once pivotal to the safe and efficient running of the colliery. I am sure that it once rang to the laughter of the working man.
In 2012 the UK consumed 64.1m tonnes of coal, of which 44.8m tonnes were imported.
@humphreyhippo It was. Have you seen the new "signature" series, where they will add a coloured leather skin to your camera? Looks so cool. It was rammed!! I had a plan of the 20 or so stands i wanted to go to and stuck to it!! We were home by 3pm!
@andrewkru they are incredible Andrew. I bought the 18-55 and 55-200 to complement my 18mm and 60mm. Can't wait to try them out, may do so tomorrow.....
@humphreyhippo judging from the crowds today, they are giving the big boys a bloody nose. It is one cool camera, and with new lenses on the way for it it's a serious camera to last the next 4 or 5 years without envy creeping in when new models come out, maybe......
Sean, we discussed photo books a while back and I've found a very good one. Looking at Photographs by John Szarkowski. It's a walk trough the history of photography, photos from both known and unknown photographers.
@primitiveprobe thanks, I'll look him up. Something McCurry said today, that to be a great photographer you need to understand and appreciate the history of photography and the masters.
Very lucky to see Steve McCurry. I really like this photo. We see a lot of abandoned buildings and rooms here on 365, but all too often, they are empty and have little personality. This one still has a human look to it, especially that out of place wing chair. Fav.
Abandoned furniture boggles my mind. Could no one else use it?
The bottle on the desk makes it for me. It appears the room was left without much prior notice. Neat.
Super image, great enlarged, Sean. Love that 'Signals for manriding conveyors'! Poignant, nostalgic. Your Fuji camera sounds good, Tina has the Finepix EXR 600, great compact zoom with Raw.
Check you out... on the home page ;) I haven't even looked at 365 for weeks really.... decided to this morning and was graced with this. Another wonderful shot from you and as always, love your story telling. Hope you are well, my friend. Lots of changes going on here but all good and moving forward :) I have just hung 3 images in a cafe for display and sale... nervous excitement lol. Take care xoxo
@ozziehoffy I am very pleased to hear from you Cass, and that things are good for you. I have been wondering how things are going for you and the boys. Well done on the images in the cafe, that is a big step.
@seanoneill Thanks Sean :) Yeah, just been rather busy. It was indeed.... and I ended up with only a couple of weeks to organise it all from choosing images to printing/framing/delivering etc. which I got done in a week as I was let down by one printer.
@cazla yes I am, largely off the back of your encouragement to do so a few months ago. I wondered if you would like to help me put a portfolio together?
Gosh not sure I'm that qualified too but very happy to help. My best friends father did it last year so will get some advice from him for you. Very pleased your doing it.
@cazla I need to put a broad portfolio of 10 shots together showing a breadth of skills. I think that's where I need advice, and working out what is missing!
I avoided the Photography Show - thought it sounded like it would be too expensive with that Fuji stand & all...
I'm trying to avoid actually seeing an XT1 in real life.
Congrats on the new toys
