I looked up this duck to get its name, American Coot. There are a lot of coot varieties. If I'm wrong about the duck's name, please let me know. This shot was taken at Green Lake last week. Thanks for stopping by.
Can i just say that a coot is not a duck! They are a totally different species but found in all the same places as ducks. We have heaps here in my area of Australia and they look the same as yours :)
Coots belong to the genus Fulica and are in the Rallidae (commonly known as Rails) family. Yours is Fulica americana and ours (the Eurasian coot) are Fulica atra. Ducks belong to the Anatidae family which includes swans and geese. Hope this helps clear up the common thought that coots are ducks :)
