Fast Food. by shepherdman

Fast Food.

We set up this "insect hotel" last year, and a month ago we watched a constant procession of masonry bees, sort of small bumble bees, enter the holes, sometimes forward, sometimes reversing in. Minimal research revealed that they were building cells along the chosen tubes, laying eggs as each was completed. This family of woodpeckers clearly thought that we have opened an avian fast food takeaway, and this morning I spotted them taking it in turns to help themselves to the conveniently packaged larvae. Slightly grainy, partly because it was taken through a window, partly because my lens isn't up to the standard of those owned by @shepherdmanswife, but mostly because it was taken before my morning cup of tea.
The best-laid plans.... I imagine you might want to be upset but everyone or thing is doing what comes naturally. And you got cool pics - you know I love a picture that represents something new to me as much as a perfect photo.

Fabulous! I want a hotel that attracts woodpeckers! Fresh food - what more could they ask for?

Fascinating…we have a similar mason bee nursery but no woodpeckers have yet discovered it
