I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I looked out of the window last night. The sun was blood red and looked so big on the horizon. Even though it made me late going out, I just had to take this shot. Can anyone explain why it looked so big?
I think it has something to do with the fact that it is on the horizon and our brain thinks that things on the horizon are far away and thus they appear bigger when in comparison to things on earth like houses or trees or, in this case the hydro pole. I'm not explaining that very well but if you google Ponzo Illusion you'll probably find a clearer explanation of it.
@gardencat is right, it's all just an illusion. You're brain is tricking you into thinking it should look bigger on the horizon. Apparently, if you turn your back to it and look at it between your legs, i.e. upside down, your brain is "untricked" and it looks the same size as it would in the empty sky. I haven't tried that yet..... @snaggy
Gorgeous find and capture, fav. I believe the size has to do with the light rays having more atmosphere to come through, but I don't know any more than that. This looks like a supersun!
Congratulations Chantal on this making the TopTwenty! Very well deserving! If I had been in the same place at the same time I never would have taken this shot. But you did and it is fantastic! FAV!
