Understanding Light.... by shepherdmanswife

Understanding Light....

I went to photo club tonight where the guy in this photo explained how to create a photo with rim lighting using just one speedlight and a black background. The idea was to show us how to create a very simple studio set up. I am very excited and will try to use what I've learnt tonight to take rim lit photos of my dogs if they will co-operate!

Nice looking model! I'm a bit of a technophobe with external flash and the maths involved, but really should try! You've created a dramatic and strong image, good work!

Chantal can you share the technique as I have found from a thread I posted on Monday there is a lot of interest in the benefits of being part of a local club.

The opening shot for 365 today. A real WOW moment. Love it.

@scarybird Set your camera on manual setting. ISO 100 AV F4 and speed 1/125. Don't change the camera settings if the photos are not quite right but alter the strength of light on the speedlight or move the light closer or further away from the subject or zoom in the light. All of these help to make the resulting photo brighter or darker.
For rim light, position the speedlight to one side of the subject. Move it around until you get the effect you want. I am a novice so can't give you any more detail than that! Have fun!

Looks amazing especially the light on that eye.

Oh wow this looks amazing, I'm even more annoyed I missed it now. Sorry I must look like a flake, Thursday is just a disaster for me during rugby season as my husband is always at training (can't really miss it as captains the side) and its a bit of a luxury to get a babysitter. Hope to catch up again at some point soon.
