Loved this guy so nonchalantly smoking his cigarette while pulling in the approximately 300 ft, 3-story riverboat we launched today. We're still old-fashioned. After they toss the boats in the water, more than 100 guys grab the ropes and pull them back in to the slip where they spend many, many months finishing them. The toughest moments are when they first start pulling, when the boat is still trying to float away and the guys are nearly horizontal in their effort to pull her in. Once they change her trajectory, tho, it's more an effort of guiding her into place, which is what these guys were doing at this point. For the record, this particular riverboat will finish out at 5 stories I think.
I got up early, early, early this morning to make it in time for the tossing. I'm just the bean counter, so my presence is not required. But I don't miss out on them! They're too much fun! But there's a big difference in tossing a tug and tossing a cruise boat. The tugs have deep, v-shaped hulls and make a spectacular splash, while the cruise boats are flat bottomed and do more skimming than sinking. I got the photos, but the guys were much more entertaining!
What a cool shot and love the expressions on the one guy smoking!! Like he's just there for fun, but he's bored!! LOL LOL I have seen when they toss the ships and it really is amazing! Lucky you to see it and get photos too!! Love this in B/W and great composition!!! FAV!
