Beignets for Breakfast by shesnapped

Beignets for Breakfast

At our house, beignets are for special occasions like Christmas breakfast, Easter breakfast, special guests, or, in this case, the last Sunday morning breakfast before the teenager heads off for Freshman year of college. Dh uses New Orleans Cafe Du Monde mix, rolls them out, fries them just so, then stacks them and adds a little powdered sugar. When we gather around the table, the sifter makes its rounds and everyone adds more powdered sugar to their individual stack. We always have enough, with plenty left over.

Here he is, the teenager, his last beignet breakfast before heading out into his next big adventure. Yes, it was a special occasion, and he was our special honored person. The next time he sits at our table and shares beignets with us, he will be a different person, with different opinions and insights and ideas. He'll think we're old and out of touch. He'll wonder how we can be so stuck in our ways and how we, his parents, can think that this is all there is and yet be content with it, while he's seeing the vast possibilities that stretch out in front of him. I remember thinking all the same thoughts about my own parents, thinking they knew nothing of the "real" world and what a pity that their horizons were so small. Sigh....

Now here we are, and the tears come so easily these days. I'm so freaking excited for this manchild, so excited for this adventure he's about to embark upon. And I know I'm not the only parent in tears tonight or this week or even this month. But these are my tears, so let me shed them. I love my boy. I've done right by him, and I've failed him. The human condition right? Yes.

Heavenly Father, watch over my boy. Guide him and protect him as only You can.

We had real beignets in New Orleans and never forget them. Didn't know you could buy the mix!

Got it. We all look back on success and failure. Too bad we can't be perfect parents all the time. But somehow, kids become their own people and even better than we imagined in their own way. These traditions are so important. 💕

@dmcoile Ah, Dianna, thank you! Your replies and fav's to these two photos of his last moments before heading out have prompted to to read them again, and to cry again! Because of the hurricane forecast and hideous weather, the college cancelled all weekend activities, and many students went home, including mine. So we had him for the weekend! But he's back at the dorm now, and my house was feeling a little lonely, my heart a little sad. Good ol' sentimental Mom! Thank you for giving me reason to shed the tears that were threatening all evening! It was good for the soul!
