The new season of camera club starts in September, and the monthly competition themes have already been published in order to give us time to start working on them. September's theme is "Reflections, as seen through the camera."
I loved this reflection that I caught yesterday morning at Chincoteague, but i didn't like the composition with the entire bird plus reflection. It was too rectangular. Does this composition work? Is that water droplet spot in the upper left hand corner adding to the story, or is it too blurry and hurting? Is this worthy of competition, or no?
ANY and ALL critique will be greatly appreciated!!!
We had a reflection competition last year as well. I think this is great because it will stand out and be different to most of the other entries. I like the composition with just a little bit of the wing showing, but I think a judge would say that the water droplet is a distraction so I would be tempted to get rid of it.
Hi Ashley - I love the image and to me it works wonderfully well without the whole of the bird - the symmetry of the 2 matching wings on the left is wonderful. But - the spot - no I don't think it adds anything it's just a distraction. :)
Hi again Ashley - I've been trying to think of a get-pushed challenge for you, without much success. I wondered if you would like to have a go at the 52week challenge for this week. It requires you to use the word "exit" as inspiration for an image conjuring up the concept that an exit can lead to a new beginning or new place or new......
If you would rather have a go at something else just give me a yell and I'll have another think. Cheers Rob :)
Get rid of the droplet. I find myself wishing that the wing tip were the same tones and color as the reflections. It doesn’t make sense to me. It would stand out as different but knowing your skill and eye I bet you can shoot something even better
1) Yes, the image is competition worthy. For me, the subject is the three wingtips (three is always good in an image), there are a number of compositional elements in play here, reflection being the most obvious and of aligning with the theme - which is good for this particular competition. 2) Yes, the droplet distracts and I think removal is warranted and will not impact the integrity of the image. 3) If the original image permits, consider a crop that leaves a tad bit more room on the right side of the image in front of the wingtips even if it means breaking standard aspect ratio. Play with that, see if you feel that strengths the image a little. :)
@dbj_365 I did indeed think a little bit more to the right of the wingtips helped! I also gave the top wing a little more show. New image is posted. Thanks for your help!
And yes - get rid of the droplet.
If you would rather have a go at something else just give me a yell and I'll have another think. Cheers Rob :)
I like the reflection but I agree with the above, the water droplet doesn't add anything so I would be tempted to remove it.
