My wife and I drove about 45 miles north to see if the leaves had changed any more than they have in our area. They hadn't. We found directions on the Internet for a waterfall called the Freedom Falls and headed for that. We never made it to the falls but we found the Rockland Tunnel which is 2,868 feet (874 meters) long. It was built for the Allegheny Valley Railroad but now it has been turned into a Rails to Trails. It was quite dark and we didn't have a flashlight. My wife got claustrophobic so we turned around.
This tunnel was built by men working two shifts, six days a week, 10-12 hours a day for 17 cents an hour. Most of them were European immigrants.
@taffy - We watched the weather last night on a different TV station and the meteorologist said that we would likely have a muted fall as far as colors due to the high temperatures and rain we've had clear up to the beginng of October. Not happy to hear that.
@skipt07 It's really frustrating to not have color, for the second year in a row. I'm seeing a little start to change in Chicago, but nothing vivid anywhere, even in the sun. Hope yours is better than ours!
This is such a beautiful shot even without the vivid fall colors. I was surprised to hear the tunnel was so long you turned around because it doesn't look that way here. Love the texture of the bricks that you caught on the sides. fav
@olivetreeann - Thank you very much! I took this on the way back out. The other end of the tunnel you could only see a little bit of light reflecting off the wall since there was a slight bend in the tunnel. The tunnel is over a half a mile long.
