My dad had a 1961 Chevy Biscayne, a very close cousin to this beautifully restored Impala - just not as fancy as this one. Note the "three on the tree" manual shifter and the aftermarket air conditioner mounted below the dash. Those were the days! Best viewed large to see all the details.
This is great! I have never actually seen an aftermarket a/c. I do remember when cars had optional a/c. My college roommate at UF bought her car in Minnesota without a/c to save money. She soon regretted that!
Would you believe, there is a catalog out there for aftermarket air conditioners for classic cars? They aren't as clunky looking as this one, but I'm amazed they exist. I love this nostalgic photo with its color and chrome, but the car doesn't have much room for a date to move over like the old days.
