Spock-20141004

This weekend a pontoon bridge was built over the Scheldt in Antwerp to commemorate the bridge that was built here in 1914 to get military supplies into the city, and later to evacuate when the Germans captured Antwerp.

We were lucky to get across, because the organisers had miscalculated the speed at which people would cross, and several time slots were cancelled, resulting in a lot of unhappy people who had bought tickets months in advance.

So this is going to be a permanent bridge? I'll have to investigate what a pontoon bridge is all about!

@maggiemae No, it was only this weekend. A pontoon bridge is made of floating pieces, and the boats you see keep them in place. As you can see by the water displacement behind the boats they have to work really hard to compensate for the strong current on the Scheldt.

This looks like such a wonderful experience! And a nice day to make the crossing, too.
