"Gladys, are you sure all these are ours?" by stefneyhart

"Gladys, are you sure all these are ours?"

In the late afternoon, early evening, the goose parents parade all their ducklings up to the other end of the long pond. Its fun to watch. I can't imagine that all these babies belong to just these parents. There are other pairs that only have two or three.
Joanne shared a website below and I guess that this is a 'gang brood'. Canada geese parents bring their goslings together in flocks known as "creches" and the goslings are communally looked after by all the adults. It's like a big kindergarten with the adults sharing the babysitting duties. They do this because the goslings will be safer; there will be more adults looking out for danger for the entire flock. At the end of the day some parents end up with more than they started with... wonder how they all get under their parents to stay warm.
Delightfully cute

I've just been reading about something called 'gang broods' among Canada geese. Experts disagree as to why this happens, but they are quite sure that goslings of different parents do mix together so I suspect this is what we have here. In case you are interested in reading more here is a link (assuming I can get it to post). http://www.about.lovecanadageese.com/gang.html

@gardencat Thanks Joanne! I checked out the site. That makes sense, I just didn't realize it before. I guess its kind of communal... they take care of whatever chicks show up but try to keep track of their original goslings. What a good idea so none of them get 'lost'. Thanks for the tip, its great learning more. I'll add a bit to my information above.
