Day 345, Year 2 - Carols At King's Choir, By Candlelight
This is day 2 of working at the King's College Chapel in Cambridge for the recording of the Christmas Carols programme for the BBC, during rehearsals with the choir.
I am not operating a camera on this job, just looking after the kit so I have had a lot of time to wander round and take photographs, and with the benefit of TV lighting. So this isn't me at all making this shot, the lighting makes it work. I must say I am really enjoying the new Fuji X-E2, with this being shot at ISO 1600 it really handles it well with hardly any noise showing.
Another lovely few days earning my living.
It really isn't always fun and games, but this is another one of those jobs where I pinch myself a little and think I am lucky to be there. The music was amazing, the choir and the voices gently flying around this great building was great fun to listen to, and to be in an environment that looks like this is a pleasure.
I also spent the evening with 365's Judith Greenwood (@judithg) who came into the centre for a quick drink before going off to shoot some nice light trails, which she hadn't done before. I hope I was able to teach her a little about it. The weather was nasty to be standing around street corners waiting for buses but it was great fun all the same. See the result here:
I can just imagine this scene and really wish I could share it with you. Your settings had to be right with these conditions and to me, they are perfect! fav
absolutely lovely viewed enlarged Steve. I will try & remember your phrase "lovely few days earning my living" & take it to heart - is is all too easy to focus on the tough times at work & not step back & really enjoy the good times. (even if a setting like *this* must be easier to enjoy than most work environments!!)
Lovely low light shot. I'd watch out for that Judith though, I hope she reciprocated with a tutorial on photographing bijou bikes and dogs in comedy costumes ... @judithg
Lovely shot! Looks like an Episcopal church but I don't see a cross. Nor do I see a cross at the alter. Was the painting added to hide a cross? Such a lovely shot. Brings forth memories of my own lessons & carols.
I stumbled upon your lovely shot and wanted to stop by and pay you a compliment. Just beautiful! Also, I listen to the Christmas carols program every holiday season, which I enjoy very much - such beautiful music. It is really fun to see it being recorded this year, through your eyes! :) Thank you!
@livvy It's King's College Chapel which is the size of a cathedral. Church of England - the alter screen has the initials of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn carved in it - so I suppose it started Catholic and changed halfway through building - he tried to have Anne Boleyn's initials removed but some were missed. There will be a cross carried in during a normal service but the painting on the altar is The Adoration of the Magi by Rubens.
You do go to some great places Steve......a varied & interesting range from cricket grounds, golf courses & all things sporty to this lovely historic building.......the lovely @judithg was a bonus!
A wonderful shot - came here from Judith's page. I read a lesson at the televised version when I was a postgrad at King's, so your image brings back happy memories.

Thank you all very much for your comments - apologies for the delay in replying.
This was a great job to be on, and meeting Judith was a bonus too. If I am on it again next year then I think a bigger, and better organised evening meet up for everyone nearby would be great. Starting in the pub, and then out somewhere for a photo.
And yes I am very lucky sometimes @happypat@ltodd with where I get to go, especially when it afford some time to take photographs too.
@rosiekerr Rosie, thank you very much for your comment. I can recommend this year's service too...some lovely music. I will be tuning in on Christmas Eve while hopefully making sausage rolls and drinking plenty of mulled wine with my folks :)
Just listening now - I think another reading and then it's Molly's postgrad one. And my friends are sitting behind the choir right now (not jealous at all - I suspect though if they ask her for a big cheque right afterwards she will write one!) Going to watch some of Steve's teams beautiful filming later though. @happypat@dolphin We will just have to queue up with the common people one year @lucypics - I have a friend who did that this morning so I'll see how she got on.
FAV -- so absolutely beautiful, and so realistically photographed to make me think if I strain my ears a bit I will hear the singing! But now I'm jealous -- you were able to photograph with professional lighting set up!
