When I got to the lake this afternoon, I spotted five Cormorants diving on a shoal of small fish.
I set myself the challenge of trying to get one with a fish in it's mouth. The problem is though, when they go underwater, you have to try and anticipate where they are going to come up. Also add the fact that as soon as they surface with a fish, it's swallowed in about a second so after two hours of trying, this as as good as it got.
I also got wrist ache from holding a 600mm lens and camera to my eye for all that time.
A monopod and the fancy Manfrotto head for it is the answer. Can’t remember it’s serial number, can look later when at home.
It lets you twist and move camera in almost any direction, yet takes the weight and keeps the camera steady. Takes a bit of practice, but it works extremely well, once you’ve got the knack.
If you are looking at monopods, a longer one than you think you need is always better.
So did he swallow it with all that ‘salad’ too? It must be more difficult for him to get it aligned and down when it is wrapped in all that stringy stuff.
