There really are no two countries that share a border that are more different from each other than the US and Mexico. Our cultures, economies and standard of living are at opposites from each other. I think that is part of the fun of a visit.
We have a small border town just half and hour away and we visit for medical, dental, trinkets, tequila and just a fun day. I went with a friend yesterday for maybe just an hour but we had a great time. There are few tourists this time of year so we got special treatment in each shop we visited. In a jewelry store we were treated to a small shot of tequila and something that was sweet and creamy. I was offered a beer too but declined - no way was I going to buy anything! I came home with just a bright and colorful Mexican blanket.
How lovely to be able to pop over and enjoy the complete contrast of cultures .We holidayed many years ago in Peurto Vallerta on the west coast and had the best holiday ever.
@wendyfrost I am so glad you enjoyed PV! I used to live there and it still owns a bit of my heart. It has changed so much though that I don't know if I would love it as much today. It was full of so much old world charm back then.
@stownsend We went in 1998 and loved it the highlight of the holiday was a days horse riding up into the mountains and through authentic villages and sugar cane farms.
@wendyfrost Wendy, I was there in '98! We hiked up a river, literally in the water some of the time, to a waterfall. On the way a group on horses was coming down. I am going to pretend it was you!
