I first fell in love with lobster pot floats when we were in Tenants Harbor before going to Nova Scotia. This is in a restaurant in Gloucester, Maine. They show the wear they have seen. Each lobsterman has his own color scheme and they sell the plain floats and all the colorful paints in the marine stores. At the end of each season they are removed, repainted and readied for the next season. These obviously were not going to be used again. You have to love them!
I love lobster buoys. There are some really colorful ones out there! Can you imagine all the work it must be to maintain all that gear every season? I read an interesting book a while back, "The Lobster Chronicles" by Linda Greenlaw, which details her experience as a lobsterman in Maine and she spends some time talking about prepping the gear... all I can say is better her than me! You did a great job with this shot! A fav!
That photo captures the "essence" of the state of Maine, doesn't it? When I think of Maine, I think of cold waters and lobster trapping. Interesting to know more about the floats, as in each lobsterman having his own color scheme.
What a charming place this would be to sit awhile! I love the bouys and the way people use them for decorating outside walls up here. Congratulations for taking some wonderful pictures and making the popular page twice today!
When someone looks at these in the restaurant they see a "decoration". Now thanks to your explanation we can understand how these are a very important tool of the trade to the lobstermen. I love it when you find out how important a "small tool" is to the scheme of things.
