Stranger Number 011 - Johnny

Another portrait of one of the Tombstone locals. Johnny told me he is a mix of German, Apache and Mexican. That makes for quite a combination and great facial character, my main objective in my stranger photos. Many thanks to Johnny.
I like the lighting and that despite his hat, his whole face is visible. Very smart facial hair as well.

Ron, this is great. What a fun and different thread (strangers)! I keep going back and forth on more light on his eyes or not. This makes him more mysterious!

Nicely done. I started a strangers project several years back, but I'm too chicken about talking to strangers. Are you doing the project where you get their story and write it up? Where can we find the stories?

@tigerdreamer Hi Karen, hey, you'd be surprised how easy it is to get someone to pose. It is intimidating, but once you overcome that it can be very rewarding. I'm trying to complete the 100 Strangers challenge - I think it's a Flikr thing - but I don't have much in the way of stories. I usually get some basic background info to publish, but that's about it. And it's good to see you back hanging around again!

@summerfield Thanks Vikki, I try hard not to use any artificial light, so as a result the ISO setting had to be cranked way up. Although it's a bit noisy, I think it's worth it to catch the natural light. Also, I'd had a few beers and couldn't figure out how to raise the flash.

@jin1x Some day?!? Hey, I've seen your photos and I think you're ready. I look forward to your portraits. ;-) Thanks for stopping by.

@pcoulson Thanks Peter. As I mentioned in my response to Vikki, I was intent on using the available light...which wasn't much. The Canon G5 is a good low light camera, but it was still necessary to crank the ISO way, way up. The resulting noise was unavoidable, but worth it IMO. Thanks for your feedback.

Interesting, to me this looks more like "subdued lighting" rather than noise" The character that is Johnny keeps me from noticing anything else! Nicely done!

Terrific lighting -- I think it adds to the overall image.

@Weezilou Thanks Louise, maybe I shouldn't have brought up the noise issue. I did smooth it out some in Lightroom. I'm happy that the character overrules the inadequacies for you - character is what I'm after when I ask a stranger to grant me the favor of a photo.

@taffy Thanks Taffy, 365 has taught me to become so much more aware of existing light. Being inside in a somewhat poorly lit facility (OK, it was a saloon - a REAL saloon!) I really wanted to capture that in the shot. Luckily the camera I used, a Canon G5 X, is really good with low light. Thanks for commenting!

oh the stories Johnny could tell! This photo speaks 1,000 words. And of course, it's always all about the light.
