I tried, largely unsuccessfully, to get a butterfly in mid-flight. Even with a fast lens (I had my f/1.4 50mm on) it was very challenging to balance aperture, lens speed, and ISO. Even at 1/4000 sec, which is the shutter speed on this shot, it was tough to stop the wing motion. Pretty much nailed it with this one, though. And I was really pleased because this was one of the more uniquely colored butterflies.
You did it!!! That was some impressive camera-handling you were doing as these flitty critters flew by! I'm feeling better about my pictures today, though I would like a redo! (I noticed a lot of the butterflies were looking a little long in the tooth!)
May I add here for Ron that not only were the camera skills a perpetual challenge, it was all done at about 90 degrees and 99% humidity! Speaking for myself, I couldn't wait to get out of there, and I was equally determined to make the most of my long drive, long wait in line and brief visit!
@Weezilou By "long in the truth" I assume you mean it looks like they've just survived a hurricane, as this guy kind of does upon close inspection. Maybe the heat and humidity did it to him too.
@joannakate Thanks Joanna. I tried to find out what kind it is. They provided a guide to the different butterfly types, but this guy was not on it. He was the only one I saw with that colouring.
@pamknowler Thanks Pam. I assume you speak from experience. I have great appreciation for the expression "as fleeting as a butterfly." Worth the trouble though!
Stay tuned for Flamingo Friday...I may post tonight!
