Mum and Me

This is a selfie of me and my Mum, taken today.
My Mum suddenly developed a fast moving dementia at the end of last year. She has always been an incredibly active and independent lady so it came as a complete shock to me and my sister that she deteriorated very quickly over an frighteningly short space of time. The point quickly came that she had to go and live in a care home as she was unsafe to be left alone. That was such a hard and sad decision to have to make. We are lucky that it is a great home and she is very well looked after and happy there.
I’m posting this as it’s a record of my Mum today looking happy and relaxed when I took her out for brunch. There have been many challenging and unhappy times for her and me over the past six months and I know that there are more to come but I’m determined to celebrate the fact that she still knows who I am today and can enjoy the simple pleasure of being out with me. I know the the time will come very soon when she won’t know me and I want to be able to look back and know that we had happy times while we could and that we smiled together.
Dementia is a cruel and horrible disease and I’m sure many of you here can relate.
Oh that is very sad .. but you have to grab the good times .. and this is a lovely photo to remember them ..

How sad, but you have a lovely happy photo of the two of you together. Enjoy every moment.

I have a friend who is in a care home suffering from Alzheimer's, John her husband died last year of a brain tumour and they were in the care home together for a while at the end of his life.

I take Elizabeth out regularly or I just go and visit her. She probably doesn't remember that I have been but she is there in the moment and is such a jolly person.
I find that as long as I keep her on the subject of things that happened a long time ago her memory is good, but she doesn't remember what she had for lunch on the days I visit etc.
I just try to make her laugh and we do have a jolly time together. I agree dementia is a terrible disease, but we have had many happy years of memories with John and Elizabeth to look back on.

@onewing living and being happy in the moment seems to be what it is all about with dementia so that is the best way to deal with it. How lovely that you visit your friend regularly.
