april @aecasey challenged me to an "introspective type of reflection".

we celebrated the thirty-eighth year of bill's 29th birthday last night with a wonderful dinner at sardine in downtown madison. we had fun playing dress up - my guy really looked dashing and spiffy. when we got home, we took our cameras and took portraits and we did that until the wee hours, greeting each other 'happy new year!' indeed it was!

we woke up quite late. when i did, i went to the living room and saw how the sunshine cast radiant shadows through the blinds. i really love the effect. but there seemed to be a pall over our happiness as we were painfully aware that i had to take my flight back to toronto the next day. we will have to do something about this long distance romance, and our plan of settling in nova scotia for when i retire isn't coming soon enough. now it's time to reflect on possibilities for the two of us.
@aecasey - here's my interpretation of introspective reflection. hope you approve. :-)

This is a beautiful selfie... Long distance can be challenging, but how lovely to have plans for the future!

Wonderful response! I can feel the mood. I'm afraid I failed at my challenge. Simple as it sounded, nothing came to me for "new year." The ebb and flow of our life is tied more to seasons than calendars, so I had no tradition to fall back on. I did try to coax the snow into making a snowman that I had the odd idea of perhaps holding a sparkler or something, but it's still too cold and it wouldn't pack. Thank you for the push though. I'm glad you were able to do so well with yours.

the mention of 29 made me smile - my mum for as long as I can remember was always 29 and holding
long distance - sigh - hopefully it won't be for too long and thankfully you are not too far away

I can't wait to be "on site" to help the two of you make that Nova Scotia transition! What fun!!!

Before finishing this, I was looking for the little notebook where I wrote birthdays...of course I can't find it! Was this event on the 31st or 1st? (I have two friends with birthdays on the 1st and completely forgot my neighbour, Barbara's in the 1st...felt like a heel! Made her a huge batch of pralines and took them to her...which is why I was there photographing her cat!
