in harmony

sally @salza and i both took and posted shots of the moon on wednesday night. i've always been curious how people from other parts of the world see the moon. i suppose that's because the moon does not rotate around its axis as it circles the earth, that we all see the same side, but of course. i've always wondered if maybe they see a different angle and that there's a scintilla of space that others don't get to view at the same time.

i've proposed to sally that we make a collage of her moon and my moon. the moon on the left of your screen is sally's, on the right is mine. both were taken last night friday, april 11. our skies in Toronto last night, although looking clear, has actually a really thin film of haze that made the details of the moon a little bit difficult to capture (or maybe because i was using a different tripod :-P). but here they are, the earth's moon seen from both hemispheres. and as i had always believed, we get to see almost exactly the same view. the difference? the positions are reversed. (duh, summerfield!)

so now, if I'm standing on the north pole with a glass full of water...

thank you for your kind views and comments; they are truly and genuinely appreciated. and you might want to wander over to south africa for sally's moon collage. @salza

What a neat idea! That is cool! I am so bad with spatial awareness, that you may say "duh" about how we see the moon reversed, but I had to stop and think about that one! haha Hard for me to picture in my head.

Actually, since I teach this unit, I learned a few years ago, that the moon does rotate. But...we always see this same side, because the time it takes to rotate is the same time it takes for it to revolve around Earth...that 28 day period. So...as it rotates, it is moving around us, so the side we see stays pointing towards us. I thought it was so confusing when I read that, but this Science program came to us this year at school. They had this HUGE inflatable Earth on a wheeled stand in the center of the gym. They let the kids rotate it by pulling ropes. The kids sat in a circle around the Earth. Then, they had a big inflatable moon. They went around the outside of that circle with the moon. The woman making the moon travel around the earth, also was spinning VERY slowly, so it did one rotation in the one revolution. The kids in the center could see how they see one side the whole time. They finally showed us what the OTHER side of the moon looks like. It is is alot less interesting. Fewer craters and "Seas." I forgot the reason for that. Anyway, fabulous moon collage from two people in different hemispheres!

Of course I had to fav this because I love the whole concept! I did know that you would both see the same view (only upside down to one another) but I didn't want to spoil your discovery! I don't remember where I learned that but it might have been at a planetarium. Anyway- great collage and great teamwork!!

This is so cool and a little mind blowing! Great idea and great shots!
April 12th, 2014
@espyetta - fewer craters and seas - because it's not subjected to the earth's gravitational pull or the effect of the sun? if i was in your class and you asked that question, i'd be going like "teacher! teacher! me! me! i know the answer!" and that would be my answer. then you would either tell me, stand in the corner, or good, vikki, now sit! :-) thank you, MB.

@olivetreeann - well, thank you, my friend, especially for not spoiling my enthusiasm! hahahaha! i always knew it but i just was getting dizzy going from one screen to another. next, little piggy and little wahoo on screen together!

@tara11 - thank you, tara.
April 12th, 2014
@salza - oops, i had to do something after i posted and i forgot to tag you. here it is!
April 12th, 2014
@summerfield I THINK That is it Vicki. But what I am not sure about is how do more objects /meteors hit that face because of OUR gravity? I cannot quite figure that one out. I am a bit "duh' about all of this. haha I wonder at times WHY They demand our 9 year olds learn so much detail of Science (and it is a pass/fail test at end of the year in 4th grade) when we don't know it? You know? They have to know ever stage of the moon phases, IN sound unit, they must learn how wave amplitude effects Volume and wave frequency affects pitch. Stuff like that. Stuff no one on the street knows! haha
April 12th, 2014
@olivetreeann I did not realize that t hing about the view, Ann! And I teach this stuff. haha IT is very fascinating to me!

Deb
Fascinating! And what a great idea. I'm going to read up on this:D FAV
April 12th, 2014
Oh this turned out beautifully! Fav especially since it was your idea!
@espyetta thanks so much for the information, really interesting. I now feel I should find out more about the moon and its dark side!
April 12th, 2014
@summerfield That will be a fun shot- actually I see a whole series!
@espyetta I'm not sure where I learned that I just remember learning it- but I've always been fascinated with the night sky and if I hadn't been so terrible in math, I'd have gone into astronomy.
April 12th, 2014
@olivetreeann @salza @deburahiru @espyetta @tara11 - how about we all sit together on a sofa? well, heck, if i knew how to do that it would be fun!
April 12th, 2014
@summerfield Okay, Well, the explanation is so hard to understand..but I think the reason they finally agree on is that there is more volcanic activitiy and lava on that side? It HAS tons of craters, too. I said that part wrong. It just doesn't have the seas/mares. So it is very 'uniform" on the back side. Lots of craters though. YOu have read at it..since you were going to be an Astromer, and see if you can make more sense. Read the section called 'Differences." And yes, we need a coffee house chat today on this material! I am so glad you posted your moon collage! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far_side_of_the_Moon @olivetreeann
April 12th, 2014
@espyetta - teacher, are you making me study this? :-( is there going to be a snap quiz? @olivetreeann
April 12th, 2014
@summerfield Yes. Pop quiz tomorrow. I will come back on here and type up some questions for you to answer. haha
April 12th, 2014
@summerfield I just went to Sally's! ;0)
April 12th, 2014
@espyetta - "I just went to Sally's!" this gave me a good chuckle. it's like sally lives just down the corner. but this is the beauty of this project. most of us are in different parts of the world and we have a virtual neighbourhood here where we can just go to someone's album and 'visit'.
April 12th, 2014
@summerfield OH yes, I just made a quick "visit" but I am back! haha Don't you just LOVE this community? I know others are leaving at times to go to Flickr, Facebook, etc to post pics, but I love talking to my old buddies on here too much to do that!
April 12th, 2014
could turn these into a pretty cool pair of glasses;
April 12th, 2014
Nice
April 13th, 2014
Very nice shot, I can never get one of these
April 13th, 2014
Some day I will post something like this... I hope... Fantastic shot!!! A FAV
April 13th, 2014
@nicholas - that would be so cool! thank you, james.

@fullcircle - thank you, cindy.

@sarasdadandmom - thank uou, terry. i have so many i can give you one. thank uou, my friend.

@lafish - thank you, laurie. i promise when i have figured out how to do this on my t3i, i will let you know.
April 13th, 2014
Does that mean that in the southern hemisphere there is no man in the moon???? (And what about the rabbit that the chinese see -- that I have never been able to see?) Do they see other figures???
April 13th, 2014
That is interesting. I have to look up to see what I see in our moon.
April 13th, 2014
Such a clever idea, most interesting
April 13th, 2014
What a clever idea and so well done, both of you!!
April 13th, 2014
cool collage and so intriguing to think about the "different perspectives" here!
April 13th, 2014
I cannot WAIT to blowzy students' minds with this tomorrow! Almost makes returning to school worth it! Lol I wish I could post a pic of their faces when they get the concept! Maybe
With wayerlogue app I could
April 14th, 2014
@summerfield yes! I will... So they can see each one better. Of I show them on my iPad under the document cAmera on projector then I can really zoom in too. Thanks for posting links here!
April 14th, 2014
As a matter of fact I will put up
Sally's first but not show them anything else... And ask them if they notice anything "odd" hee hee IF no one figures it out (don't think they will) then I will show the rest and explain. They will freak.
April 14th, 2014
this is great!
