well, i think for the first time i was a disappointment to my get pushed partner. so i had to take another shot for the challenge which is "action".
i got off work much too late than usual so i walked down to the union station to see if the big window was lit. it was but because it was late the offices were closed so there was no chance of seeing someone walking through the passageway. but the front entrance of royal york hotel was rather attractive with the lights. sad that the american flag's light was busted but the flag was still proudly waving. the pattern of the steps inside (going up to the hotel's lobby) made for a nice backdrop of the passerby in "action".
shot handheld - because i was lazy to lug the tripod with me - in ridiculously high ISO 3200. a couple of men asked me if i sell my photos and i said "sure i do!" one of them, a rather well dressed gentleman with an english accent, asked how much would i charge for this photograph. some people would jump at the chance of making money out of this, but i told them i can't sell this photo except to royal york hotel if they want to buy it. you see, unless this is part of a larger landscape, the law prohibits us from selling the image of a fixed structure, especially when the structure's brand name is shown prominently in the photograph. that's just too bad. we exchanged business cards he said just in case i change my mind. i told him i probably won't because the law is the law.
thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are truly appreciated.
@bill_fe - also, you know that this is more or less a crappy photo. if i were to sell this, i would shoot it properly - lower ISO, longer exposure and use a tripod. thank you, billy.
You could blur or blank out the writing but I guess everyone would know anyway! Never knew that about the law! I wonder if it the same here. I think this is a super photo - took me a while to see the "action"!
@grammyn - thank you, katy. i think i've found a solution to it. the man has sent me a text asking yet again. what i would propose to him is i take a photo of him standing in the middle of the street and i take a photo of him with this as the background. i'd ask him to buy an SD card and i will use it in my camera. i won't be able to put in my watermark but the exif would show ownership to me. then i can charge him a small fee for the service. i am a genius, am i not? but i think i should check with the lawyers at the office. :-)
@northy - i shall! i got a text from him asking if i changed my mind. i'll get him to buy his SD card, i shoot him with the hotel as background, he pays me for the service, he can have his card and have the photo printed himself. but i will be checking in with my IP lawyer buddy first. thank you, kiddo.
How fabulously awesome that you worked around "the law"! I never heard of anything like that! I'm sure the gentleman was elighted...a marvelous souvenir of a lovely visit to be sure! Congratulations!
Boy, you are a stickler for the law! Maybe you could print them out and have someone sell them for you in the black market....under a pen (I mean, photo) name! Wonderful night shot....and, superb for handheld...
