She has been plotting it for several weeks now, and today, she takes the first step. Angela smiles at the receptionist as she walks straight down to Mr. Babur's office. Mr. Babur recognizes her right away. "You come back for the dream car?" he asks and Angela waves a bank cheque at him.
Two hours later, Angela parks her new secondhand Honda Civic a block from her apartment building. On her walk she notices the daffodils and hyacinths and she is taken aback by the vivid yellow and the waxy purple of the flowers that take her breath away. She stops to look at them closely and the faint smell wafting in the air makes her think it was a good sign. She quickens her step towards the building, almost skipping, but she feels light headed from excitement.
She turns the key quietly even though she knows no one is inside. Frank would be gone by this time and the stillness soothes her. She walks straight to the backroom and retrieves a large suitcase, gives the whole place a once over as she pulls it towards the door.
When she has put the suitcase in the trunk of her new secondhand Honda Civic, she looks back at the daffodils and the hyacinths which slowly nod from the faint breeze. She starts the car and drives away. Occasionally, she looks at the building from her side mirror until it disappears.
On the highway now, she turns on the radio and a soft jazz music fills the interior of the car. Free at last, she thinks. She will call Frank when she has crossed the border to tell him he's on his own. She expects him to yell at her with all kinds of profanities but she wouldn't care. He wouldn't believe that she can walk out on him, he has said she would never, could never. But she knows deep inside him, he knows she can and she will. She is now.
