i can never understand graffiti. i presume the writings are all coded messages, and even the way they are stylized or coloured. where i came from, graffitis are works of gangs and painting them on one's property, whether they be the property owner or not, and whether the property owner wants it or not, is a sign of claiming that property and its vicinity as their territory and others be warned.
in the 1990's, graffiti was a big problem for the city of toronto and property owners. until someone hit on an idea that in the interest of beautifying the city, graffiti artists were 'commissioned' and paid to display their "artwork" in partnership with businesses. with the business owners dictating the kind of "artwork" that would be painted on their properties, this resulted in themed murals in different places in the city. the graffiti alley was one such place.
graffiti is seen by some as art form, an expression of the artist's sentiment and adds to the city's culture, while others see it as a form of vandalism, ugly and damages property and diminishes the property's value.
i should stop, as i'm probably just talking out of my ass here because what do i know of graffiti? and the meds are kicking in. i have a high fever and i feel chilly and i feel like there are giant drills boring into my skull, all 20 of them.
Interesting to also understand the difference between 'tagging' and 'graffiti' and now I always wonder if a piece of art is actually a tag. All rather confusing to me, but I do like your image and its framing.
Very colourful. I too don't really understand the intricacies of what is art and what is not but if it looks good, I like it. Hope you have a speedy recovery and a couple of days off work :)
Sorry to hear you're crook as a chook. Hope you feel better soon. I have no idea of what this piece might, or might not mean. But I rather like it. To me tagging is sheer vandalism and has no artistic merit whatsoever. One might not like graffiti, but it does have some artistic merit so long as it doesn't merely deface a surface.
There's a difference between mural art and graffiti. I engaged a personal battle with graffiti makers on my building's walls - for the time being, I'm the winner :-)
Nice composition on this grafiti. I agree with you. I don't understand it either. There is a gravity alley in Cleburne. Not far from Granbury. I do hope you feel better soon.
If someone says, "This brick wall is ugly, go ahead and paint something here" to me that's a mural and an artist's style is an artist's style. The rest of it, whether it looks good or not, is vandalism. If it wasn't asked for, it's not supposed to be there and the so-called artist had no right to put it there. Probably too black and white for this generation but I don't care! I do care that you're not feeling well and hope this cold/flu passes quickly as it does not sound too comfortable!
I imagine going out in the cold weather that you have been having to take some of these magnificent photos that you have been taking is what is causing you to not feel well now. I hate that you are suffering for your art.
My brain is too tired to try and engage in the debate. I cant deny that I like this shot very much. Whether I like the actual graffiti would very much depend on its context. I hope that a good rest will sort your head and that you soon feel much better.
I hope you feel better soon!
