harvey wallbanger was my friend in mixology back in the mid-90's when i was studying hospitality management as a possible career change. for four months for three days a week, we learned, hands on, how to do bartending, which means we not only learn how to manage a bar, set up a bar, but mix drinks as well - from the simple rusty nail to the delicate irish coffee; from building up a bloody mary to that elixir of quietude of a stirred martini. at the end of the term, 70% of the final exam is an impromptu order of two cocktails from the professor and a guest faculty. the name of the cocktails is drawn from a bowl as you take the stage. you have to make the cocktail without hesitation as to what kind of alcohol and other ingredients are involved, and what kind of glass to use as well as the proper garnish (lemon wedge or cherry or olives). it was a timed exam.
the professor drew long island iced tea - four main alcohol that you have to build in a tall glass with ice and you have to recite the order of the alcohol as you build the drink. the guest faculty member drew a harvey wallbanger. as i was making it, i couldn't help giggling because i was imagining what a wallbanger would be - and it's pretty darn obscene in my mind.
What a fantastic story to accompany this colourful shot, I've learned something. Not too sure what, but something. BTW, I've always thought Harvey Wallbanger should be renamed something less salacious!
I'll have to share this with daughter, Ashley. She was working for an advertising agency in downtown Chicago when she told us she could pick up an extra job as a bartender. I pointed out that she knew nothing about mixing cocktails, and with her self-assuredness, she said she could learn form the internet! She got the job in a well-know downtown restaurant, loved working banquets and came home with big tips for one night's work, and only recently was a guest bartender for a week in the town she lives in up the coast! I have no idea how she did it, but she looks after us when we're all on vacation together or just visiting down home! She and I would both approve your beautiful presentation!
An early morning chuckle ;-) love your story, especially the end! It has crossed my mind every time I had one. I have never met a "Harvey" though! Great shot of this fabulous cocktail.
great orange. I just played a videogame (sigh) in which you had to give a man a harvy wallbanger so he would bang his head on a wall and thus release a clue somehow... (sorry) this is completely lovely with the white background and pink umbrella accent
Ok, brings back memories I'll have one with a Zombie chaser. You've done it I have fallen off the wagon wait til I tell Christine @k1w1 what you've done. LOL Just kidding.
I think you have learned a great skill there. You are invited to my next party. The image, free of clutter, looks most tempting, beautifully done, and invocative of relaxation and holidays (and none of the other stuff you were talking about).
