instant decaf by summerfield

instant decaf

personally, i know of at least one person who poo-pooh's instant coffee - only the freshly ground one would do. but for a lot of other people especially in the third world countries, instant coffee is a luxury, even more so brand name instant coffee.

my mother was born in a province in the philippines which used to be the coffee capital of the world. now the place is not even a shadow of its former self. but i remember growing up my mother would "boil" coffee beans in the morning, sometimes she would roughly pound them for a stronger flavour. but as we grew up and the coffee plantations gave way to other crops and the status quo had been lost, fresh coffee beans became a rarity in our home. i remember a time when there was a coffee crisis and my mother had to roast rice until the grains are so dark imitating the look and smell of coffee. then it was just instant coffee.

i have a reaction to coffee; i wretch when i smell it. and prolonged exposure to its smell makes me faint. the good thing with this instant coffee in my cupboard is that it's so old the smell is practically gone. but not to worry, i didn't take any chances. gloves and masks were employed in making this shot.

thank you so much for your kind views and comments as well as the generous favs you gave to my album cover yesterday. much appreciated, kind folks.
Nicely photographed, the granules look like tiny specks of gold

Nice for the mundane coffee challenge. I love the smell of coffee. Although no do like coffee, I think it does smell better than it tastes. It is interesting how different aromas affect people differently.

you do have some funny quirks . was coffee in the Phillipines only grown as an export to colonising countries?

I’m one of those people. But I don’t judge others for enjoying it! I just don’t like the instant stuff. Makes me feel ill!

I happily drink both, not at once. Love the shot, the grains of coffee are glowing.

A great shot and story! I am a tea drinker, so it would not bother me anyway ;-)

This brings back so many memories. My mother drank instant coffee every morning. When I visited her I fussed about it too. But she loved it and that’s really all that mattered!

Interesting story. My Mom and Dad used to drink instant coffee. I think it was new then and easier to make. I'll remember to bring a Timmy's with me when I visit. LOL

I like the texture. I'm sorry you're so allergic. I love coffee and grind my own beans every morning.

A terrific picture for the mundane challenge. I like the composition and the detail very much. An interesting commentary about coffee too.

I am surprised you ventured to take the photo given the reactions you describe. What commitment! Strange how the instant coffee looks like gravel close up. I wont give you my views on what it tastes like - but your anecdote is very interesting.
