toronto isn't like chicago. in 2016, coming back from san francisco, our flight took us over lake michigan. i was taking pictures of the moon that was so eerily within my eye level, when it was announced that we were minutes away from landing in toronto. as soon as i put away my camera and settled back on my seat, i looked out the window and saw downtown chicago, its buildings only barely reflecting light from the moon, the sears tower outlined by tiny lights -- the buildings were silhouettes against black and i kicked myself for having put away my camera and not able to shoot that scene; the plane you understand is one fast machine.
then as we approached toronto, i looked to my right and there was the downtown core, all lit up like a billion diamonds scattered on the black of the velvety night, the CN tower accenting the glittering scenery. i could easily make out our office building.
i can tell you that this building, as are most of the buildings in the downtown core, are LEEDS certified, meaning it is "designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: location and transportation, sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality." what i know though is no matter what time of night i look at the downtown skyline (weather permitting, of course) all buildings are lit. maybe because we needed to be seen as there is always a lot of air trafffic above us.
i keep babbling here and there's a beautiful deep orange sky in front of me and the sun is just about to rise out of the horizon. i better enjoy it.
thank you for your kind words and generous favs on yesterday's folded book pages. surprised me really as i didn't think much of it.
I remember flying over Chicago on my way to Minnesota once. It was incredible to see all the lights of Chicago end abruptly as Lake Michigan began. I hate I did not have my camera out for THAT shot
Excellent shot and narrative. My only experience with Chicago was getting stuck at the airport and being put up in a Holiday Day Inn for the night. I've not yet been to Toronto- maybe this year?? But your descriptions remind me of flying in to the major airports here. I love the way the lights look like jewels scattered on velvet.
@summerfield getting my knees back to walking condition- step 1. getting back to work at Judy's step 2. that will produce step 3- money to travel and plans to go!
interesting commentary. So much energy being burned up 24 hours a day in the cities. You found a great pov on this to illustrate your narrative. Hope you enjoyed that sunset.
