orchids

there are a number of flower arrangements around the office -- welcome gestures from the building administration and other suppliers. the problem with the new office is its wide-open concept, glass partitions everywhere and there's no discreet way of shooting anything. this i had to shoot in a hurry although i did manage to take more than a couple.

everything is new, and there's so much to learn. the printer/photocopier is rather difficult to get used to with all those icons on the screen. i wonder what we would do when it breaks down. or when another power outage like the widespread northeastern blackout that happened in 2003. that was quite fun and irritating. i walked down 34 flight of stairs to find chaos in the street, and of course no trains or street cars. it was still summer and the temperature at the time was in the mid to high 20's. i remember getting the last can of coke from the hotdog vendor and i had it inside my blouse on my chest as i walked. stores were offering water to passersby. a businessman directed traffic at an intersection and miraculously, most drivers obeyed. people were offering rides. i was all set to walk the 7.5 kilometres (4.66 miles) to home but then partner picked me up halfway. at home i was forbidden to open the fridge. and no power meant no water. for supper, we opened a can of tuna and bought buns at the drugstore to make sandwiches. there was no way i was going to sleep without brushing my teeth so i bought a bottle of water, almost the last one and i refused to share it.

work was suspended the next day -- downtown was hit hard and didn't have power back on until after the 24th hour. ours at home came on the next morning.

With more and more people and businesses using power, it won't surprise me if power outages become more frequent. I'm glad we'll be getting our own generator at some point- whenever Jeff's schedule frees up enough for him to work on bringing it up here. In the meantime- lovely orchids and hopefully no power loss in the future for you!

WoW, that’s quite some story...hopefully, it won’t repeat itself 😅

I just had a conversation with someone yesterday about how we live in 73 degrees F (22 C) year round and can no longer handle the heat or cold temps. So, when the power is out, YIKES! We have that same issue during hurricane season. We usually get hit sometime in September or October. October is a much more comfortable temperature than September in the Southern US is.

They are lovely. Our power company uses rolling blackouts to keep from shutting down every power grid at once. We now have so many people in Texas electricity has become foremost on everyone’s minds because our temperatures are 100 degrees Fahrenheit or above every day.

Fabulous shot and framing of these gorgeous orchids. Love your story, a great read. In our country we sure know all about rolling blackouts :-(

Beautiful orchids. Things certainly grind to a halt when there is no electricity!
