How many Mourning Doves does it take to ....

.... fill a deck railing? About 25! They normally prefer to be on the floor of the deck or on the ground underneath [which is about 10 feet below] but sometimes they line up, shoulder to shoulder, along the railing and clean up what's left of the seeds.

Many thanks for dropping by.
Since they have 4-5 broods a year, not many :-) Great capture. Good morning.

Lovely line-up! You must spend a fortune on bird seed! I really must look into buying different types of seed.
February 17th, 2012
I agree with Judith - you must spend a fortune on bird food! I know I do, but I don't have nearly as many birds as you do. I love the sound of mourning doves.

Wonderful group shot!

Great capture Anne!
February 17th, 2012
That means you must have a lot of poop to clean off in the spring!
February 17th, 2012
Splendid Line Up! Like the different poises they took for your shot! Your railing really is delightful for all the many birds! Nicely Done, Anne!
February 17th, 2012
LOL I almost had this exact shot yesterday...but they all flew off. Great capture.
February 17th, 2012
What the heck? They sure are enjoying themselves at your expense! Great, feel good picture.
February 17th, 2012
Great capture! They look like they posed just right for you.
February 17th, 2012
Looks like a beautiful line up at a buffet! How soft and gorgeous they look there.
February 17th, 2012
they look like cows at a feeding trough
February 17th, 2012
Wow! Awesome capture! They look so pretty all lined up! I can't get close to the ones here. They are easily spooked.
February 17th, 2012
Wonderful- I would never leave the deck if I were you.
February 17th, 2012
Really like how you captured the line-up. Ours just kind of flounder all over the place and aren't as organized ;-) Neat shot!
February 17th, 2012
Awww, cute! It's a dove convention!
February 17th, 2012
@timandelke it's funny elke, people think that and so did I when hubby first started putting the seed out there, but we've been doing this for a few years now and there's none at all. i have no idea why. now that i've said that, i hope things don't change! lol
February 17th, 2012
Great shot. You have so many different birds there. You must have a good bird restaurant.
February 17th, 2012
@jannkc I would never leave the deck if I were the birds :)
February 17th, 2012
Love your title. Great capture.
February 17th, 2012
they take over the feeders here, but there have been a few falcon lunches as of late and they must have a better hiding place now. great pic
February 17th, 2012
How lovely to see so many together like this
February 17th, 2012
they sure did multiply ....
February 17th, 2012
awww, i love mourning doves (wonder why they call them that?). this is a great shot Anne!
February 17th, 2012
Beautiful shot!
February 17th, 2012
Lovely shot!!
February 17th, 2012
Gosh what a variety of birds you get, these look lovely all lined up. We have collard doves here which just have a lighter ring colour around their necks, they are a grey/brown colour, but not these birds. I wonder if they are called mourning doves because of their black spots, like the black arm bands people used to wear when mourning?
February 17th, 2012
I love the group shot, Anne! You get the most amazing number of birds. 25 is alot at one time. I find it interesting that different types of birds all seem to descend at the same time. Like where are the grosbeaks now that the mourning doves have arrived? Do they take turns?
February 17th, 2012
Nice capture of the group. I love the way mourning doves are shaped. I think their heads are especially pretty.
February 17th, 2012
What a great lineup! I can't believe the squirrels don't chase them all away.
February 17th, 2012
That is a lot of birds!! Great capture!
February 17th, 2012
What a fun shot!
February 18th, 2012
Wow, you sure do indulge your birds. This is a neat line up. To answer Jen, they are called mourning doves because of their mournful sound.
February 18th, 2012
Well how nice of them to sit there so nicely for you to take a great shot
February 18th, 2012
@busylady @sparkleplenty1 thanks ladies! yes, we're buying less this year because the grosbeaks are not here in the great numbers they were last year but we're probably still using about 8 lbs of black oil sunflowers seeds a day. If it's really cold or snowy, we put out more. I've only been putting out the peanuts for a week or two, and only a handful at a time, so no cost there, to speak of.
February 18th, 2012
@paulaag @jennywren @falcon11 thanks ladies! yes, i agree with allison, they get their name from the soft woo-ooo-ooo sound they make.
February 18th, 2012
@lauriehiggins thanks laurie! yes, they're pretty good at taking turns, but the deck is big enough that they can come at the same time too, if they really want to. Kala keeps the larger birds away when she's on the deck [a couple of hours a day]. the jays, then the grosbeaks are mostly likely to appear earliest. the woodpeckers and smaller birds come and go all day. the mourning doves seem to come later in the morning or in the afternoon. i'm planning to do the cornell bird count this weekend [the one christie was talking about] so i'll be paying more attention to times and numbers.
February 18th, 2012
@karens68 haha, the squirrels are too fat and lazy ... just my humble, biased opinion ... they're not my favourite visitors ... ;-) my favourite part of the day is when our dogs put the run on the squirrels. i'm easily amused.

Cool
February 18th, 2012
Cute capture, how lovely to see so many!
February 18th, 2012
Very cute to see them all in a row like that! Great shot!
February 18th, 2012
@sunnygreenwood , thanks for the info. i intended to look it up, but never got it done. makes sense that this is how they came about their name:)
February 18th, 2012
I don't know that I've ever seen that many in one spot. I am so used to seeing them in pairs usually
February 18th, 2012
Nice shot! I'm with @digitalrn - I don't think I've seen that many at once, either. We have a pair that will come to our feeders, but I never see more than the 2 of them.
February 18th, 2012
Lovely shot Anne :)
February 18th, 2012
Gorgeous shot, two of the birds in it look really sleepy! :)
February 18th, 2012
Excellent catch of all of them.....(they are attracted to your deck!)
February 18th, 2012
Woah! I've never seen so many all together!
February 20th, 2012
Hehehehe looks like they're standing in line for concert tickets or something... great catch
