I've been photographing Ospreys on this stretch of river/road for a couple of years now and this is the first time I've managed to capture the pair this early in the season. Previously the babies have already been born ... ;-)
pps. I should add, they're on a structure at the top of a very tall pole. It's a platform made of a wooden frame and wire bottom, with long branches running through both ends for perching. A pair will eventually build a nest on the platform. This female was actually sitting on an existing nest from last year, just one pole further down the road when we came along. When I got the camera out she switched to this new pole and then the male joined her.
Anne, this is fantastic and a fav! I'm been dying to get a good shot of the osprey. They are in abundance around here but it's been hard to capture any of them. A nest appears to be in progress on a tall dead tree on the next block and I've been keeping a close watch. They are so interesting to watch. One pair had a nest for years across the rd. from us for years but it was destroyed by Hurricane Charley in 2004 and they haven't been back since.
Many years ago Ospreys were endangered on the Cape and Tom's daughter started a campaign to build the poles and boxes. We always see them now. Kristen passed away when she was 15 but her boxes are still there. Beautiful capture, Anne, it's rare to catch two at once in a photo. And in motion too!
Now THIS needs a DOUBLE fav! Wow. Who built the boxes for these guys? are they by the road in public or at a preserve? I wish I had this, well, not THIS above exactly, to watch every day!
Beautiful shot, Anne! Such great action! I love watching the osprey at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History - my brother volunteers there part time. They always have osprey there, and they have a web cam on one of the poles, so you can see them right in their nests, My kids in school had the "osprey cam" on all the time to see the baby chicks.
