St. Austell is one of those towns that has sadly lost it's way. Developers seem intent on ripping out anything good the town has to offer and replacing it with nothing of any real merit. The recent hugely expensive shopping centre redevelopment being a classic example. They have replaced the original 1960's concrete carbuncle with a 1960's inspired (and almost identical) concrete carbuncle.
To be honest they could have just given the old shopping centre a bit of a face lift and it would have looked just as good and saved millions of pounds.
As part of the redevelopment process, they have managed to drive most of the really good independent retailers out of the town to make way for the prestigious big name stores..... who never came. The whole thing has been a disaster on a truly monumental scale and leaves me wondering where exactly all those millions of pounds went. It was just such a wasted opportunity.
However, if you look really hard, you can sometimes still catch a small glimpse of something beautiful.
Lost its way??? I'm not sure that it ever found it...
Don't get me started on developers. Here they are about to demolish a 1960's eyesore and replace it with something that can only be described as a huge dog turd...
It sounds like Dundee years ago, however it's recovered a good deal.
I don't trust councils (especially planners) ever to get things right....
