Prompted by the current technique challenge on portraits, I made arrangements to photograph Joddy Crosswhite, who is one of the key musicians at the center of a rich tradition of music on Beaver Island. Taught by his mother, a professional singer (he performed with her as a child, along with his brother and two sisters, in a group in Ohio called Dusty and the Kinsmen). He’s a performer, has his own recording studio where he serves as sound engineer for others and records his own music, and is a craftsman with a large workroom where he can build and repair instruments. He’s currently building a beautiful guitar that is more the size of a flat mandolin. I was thrilled when he agreed to be my portrait subject for an afternoon ‘shoot’ in his studio. I probably took over a hundred photos and he was so gracious, letting me snap way as he played various instruments, while he demonstrated the recording studio and shared the draft of an album he is recording of his son – also a very talented musician and songwriter. It was a great afternoon!
@jodimuli I was so lucky -- he gave me a CD of the album his creating now with/for his son Stryder. He told me I couldn't share it, so I felt very honored to be able to hear it in advance.
Great shot and excellent for the challenge. Thanks for the reminder on this one- I just can't remember to check the discussions area enough and see what is new! Maybe this weekend I'll get a chance.
@pflaume Thanks Lisa. I felt pretty good about it. It may be my favorite portrait I've taken but a lot has to do with Joddy being such a great subject!
Thank you for your kind comments and favs. Joddy really is an amazing person and so down to earth. I'm glad to be able to share him with others on 365. He's one of Beaver Island's treasures.
Thank you for stopping to view Joddy's portrait. He deserves the attention -- he's a great person!
Thanks so much for stopping and commenting. I can't wait to share with Joddy the positive comments about his portrait.
