I'd been reading the chapter in the August book club book about observing -- seeing the familiar in new ways, getting away from 'rules' in photography (he called it learning to 'think sideways'). And I had a tag challenge starting today (nature + red). So I decided to use only what was in my study/guest room (where I was sitting at the computer looking for a distraction) to try to capture something that involved nature and red. Nature wasn't that hard -- I had collected 5 feathers on the golf course this week. But, nothing was red. I took several macros of the feathers into the light from the window. I noticed in one of them, the sun looked quite big, round, clear, and very bright white. About a half hour later, I noticed the sun turning red and got my idea for today's shot -- red sun is a part of nature, as is the turkey feather! Posting in main album is from a small symmetrical feather and reminded me of a fan. Posting in extras album is more solid and reminded me of a wing ( http://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2013-08-01).
So appreciate that you share your thought process and the evolution of the shot. It is very beautiful! The silhouettes of the feather strands against the red is striking.
This is remarkable from a litter feather – so creative. We can meditate in our familiar environment and try to find something unique (as I read from the book club), but to create a satisfactory photo is another step – you have achieved it.
Ooh hoo, I love this one! Fabulous work and love how toy shared your thoughts too. This is where I really think the book club is going to reap benefits for everyone participating.
Thank you all so much for your fav on this shot! I really appreciate it. It was fun to see an exercise and a book chapter lead to a photo I was so happy with.
